3/5K Event Planned April 23, 2009

Finally, after many weeks of work… the 3/5K event is set!

Last week’s news that CSR has been cut from the budget was very disappointing. It is a topic that is an emotional one for parents with young children affected by the decision. While we cannot save CSR, what we can do is show teachers we support them.

The proceeds of this event will benefit our grant program for teachers. It is our way of getting much-needed teaching materials directly into the classrooms, where they are needed most.

Show the entire district that we support our teachers! Participate in this event. Think of what a statement it would make if  huge numbers came out to participate!

I have been a faithful contributor to class size reduction efforts through the foundation in the past. Like most parents, I am extremely disappointed with the recent announced cuts in the class size program. I know this is not a political organization so I am reluctant to make the following comment in this forum, but feel it needs to be said.

We never will be able to take back our classrooms from Sacramento until the Teachers Unions are stopped. If they truly cared about the children of this state, they would take the union dues they collect and put them back in the classroom rather than contribute millions of dollars to various non-educational political causes. Until we stop the unions, the fact of the matter is, we never will gain control of our classrooms. I would encourage all teachers that belong to the Union to support the parents that support you by asking for an accounting of your union dues. How much of thuat money made it to the classroom?….. not enough!

I have waited to see if there would be any response to Ryan’s comment. What are your opinions regarding the teacher’s union? Do you agree with Ryan? Is this the only way we can take back our classrooms? What about restructuring the property tax allocations?

Some of the Trustees have commented about their hopes that budget shortfalls can be made up in union contract negotiations. Tell me your thoughts on this as a possibility.
