College Requirements March 9, 2009

Whatever the age of your children, whether seniors in high school or still in pre-school, at some point college entry requirements will be an issue in your life. If you’ve been there, done that, what advice can you give to help the rest of us? What would you do differently? Was the information received at your child’s school clear? Was it adequate? Did you receive information from other sources? And how about test prep… did your child have a tutor to prepare for SAT testing?

Fill me in, because I will need to start thinking about these issues as I have a child going into high school next year.

Thoughts on Volunteering March 4, 2009

My son plays baseball in Little League and I volunteer as Team Mom, working in the snack bar, and working the scoreboard during the games. The league is all volunteer. Everything that gets done, gets done on a volunteer basis.

I have always volunteered at school, too. Moreso when my son was in elementary school, as Room Mom or classroom helper in some capacity… grading papers, reading groups, P.E. helper, whatever.

With budget cuts and a slumping economy on the horizon as far as we can see, I think that it is our responsibility to volunteer in whatever way we can. Maybe we donate our time, or maybe goods or services. Maybe we can help out in a financial capacity. For me, when I do what I can, I feel “a part of”, I feel like I’m doing the right thing. and that always feels good. I think amazing things can be accomplised when everyone works together for a common cause. And, i think it’s the way things have to be for the future.

What do you think? Are you open to pitching in where you can? Do you mind if you’re volunteering and the guy next door does nothing? Where and how do you volunteer/ Do you enjoy it? What do you think it teaches your children?

It is so great to have the foundation. As a separate, private, independent non-profit foundation, the CUSD Foundation does an amazing job dedicating it’s efforts to the support of the kids. We spend quite a bit of time working to create educational avenues for our kids that make a difference.

Our mission is to do it all “For The Kids.” I wonder what more we can do? Where is the greatest need in the Capistrano Unified School District.

It’s clear that the Governor is proposing record budget cuts that will ultimately have an impact on our kids education. i was raised with art, PE, shop classes and great after school programs that were taken for granted. Now…. in this economy our kids futures are at stake.  It’s a scary thought but one that is so true.

I can not imagine my children growing up without the spenders that an after school program offers. That’s why I’m on the board. To make sure every kid has a chance to be a kid. That’s why I donate my time and my money.

Simply put…. I want to help the kids.
